Technology advisory session

Technology leadership that protects the board from vendor momentum.

ERP selection, architecture decisions, and implementation oversight - without referral fees or vendor relationships. For mid-market organisations where the cost of the wrong platform decision runs into the millions.

Independent technology advisory is senior-level guidance on platform selection, ERP evaluation, architecture decisions, and implementation risk - without referral fees or vendor relationships. Assured Velocity provides technology advisory for mid-market organisations facing significant platform decisions where the cost of the wrong choice is high and internal expertise is limited.

Where technology decisions create board-level risk

ERP selection and replacement

ERP decisions are among the most consequential a mid-market business will make. Vendor selection driven by demonstration rather than requirements, or by relationship rather than fit, produces implementations that do not deliver what the board was promised.

Platform lock-in without evaluation

SaaS and cloud platform commitments made without independent evaluation of long-term fit, data portability, and total cost create dependencies that are expensive to reverse and invisible until they become a problem.

Technology debt accumulation

Systems acquired through growth or acquisition that were never integrated properly create operational fragility and data quality problems that compound over time without a board-level view of the risk.

Build vs buy decisions made without independent input

Custom development decisions made without a structured evaluation of available platforms, or platform decisions made without evaluating the build option, carry risk that only becomes visible at the point of implementation.

Implementation oversight gaps

Technology implementations without independent programme oversight lose pace, scope, and budget in ways that are not visible to the board until the damage is done.

Architecture decisions made in silos

Technology architecture choices made by IT without reference to operational requirements, or by operations without reference to technical constraints, create integration problems that are expensive to fix after the fact.

What Technology advisory covers

Technology engagements are scoped to the decision the board needs to make. Our lead technology partner has documented outcomes including £50m capital release through regulatory remediation and £21m annual Opex reduction across regulated banking, defence, and SaaS platforms. Typical work covers:

  • Requirements definition, operational requirements translated into technology selection criteria before vendor conversations begin
  • Vendor and platform evaluation, structured, independent assessment against defined criteria with a board-ready recommendation
  • Architecture review, independent evaluation of current and proposed technology architecture against operational and strategic requirements
  • Technology debt assessment, risk-rated view of accumulated system fragility and the sequencing required to address it
  • Implementation oversight, independent programme oversight to keep delivery, scope, and cost visible at board level
  • Post-implementation review, structured assessment of whether the technology is delivering what was promised and what is required to close any gaps

"We had a preferred vendor before we had defined requirements. Assured Velocity rewound that process, built the requirements properly, and the vendor we ended up with was not the one we started with."

COO, mid-market business

"The implementation was six weeks in before anyone asked whether the integration architecture would handle our transaction volumes. Assured Velocity caught it before it became a go-live problem."

What clients say

What clients say.

“We had a vendor shortlist and no way to evaluate it properly. Assured Velocity gave us the framework and the confidence to make the right call.”

CTO · Financial services firm

“The technology selection was being driven by the vendor. Having independent evaluation criteria changed the outcome entirely.”

MD · Mid-market business

“They stopped us signing a contract that would have locked us into a platform that did not fit our operational model. Saved us years of pain.”

COO · Insurance broker

“The requirements they produced were more rigorous than anything we had internally. The vendor could not answer half of them. Telling.”

FD · Professional services firm

“Senior, independent, and with no platform revenue. Exactly what a technology decision of that size requires.”

CEO · Mid-market operator

“The Business Review found the root cause in our process, not the system. We avoided a platform migration we did not need.”

Operations Director · Logistics business

Frequently asked questions

When should a mid-market business bring in external technology leadership?

The most common triggers are: a technology leader departure creating a gap, a major programme (ERP, platform migration, cloud) that requires more senior oversight than exists internally, a board or investor asking difficult questions about technology risk, or a situation where technology is visibly holding the business back and internal resource cannot resolve it.

What does a technology health check or assessment cover?

A technology assessment examines your current state across infrastructure, applications, data, security, and ways of working. It identifies technical debt, risk concentrations, capability gaps, and cost inefficiencies. The output is a prioritised set of findings with a recommended roadmap - not a shopping list of new tools.

How do you approach technology strategy for organisations that are not technology companies?

Technology strategy for a non-tech business starts with business outcomes, not technology trends. We ask what the business is trying to achieve commercially in the next three to five years, and work backwards to what technology capability that requires. The goal is a technology estate that enables the business - not one that exists for its own sake.

What is a technology maturity assessment and what does it tell you?

A technology maturity assessment benchmarks your current technology capability across dimensions such as architecture, security, data management, and operational resilience against a defined maturity model. It tells you where you are relative to where you need to be for your current and future business requirements, and what the gap-closing priorities should be.

How do you help organisations that have an ERP implementation that has gone wrong?

ERP recovery starts with an honest assessment of where the implementation actually is - not where the vendor or internal project team says it is. We identify whether the issues are primarily technical, process, data, or leadership-related, and develop a recovery plan with realistic timelines and costs. Sometimes the right answer is to remediate; sometimes it is to change approach entirely.

Can you run a technology procurement or vendor selection process on our behalf?

Yes. We can lead or support vendor selection for ERP, CRM, infrastructure, and specialist applications. This includes requirements definition, RFP design, vendor evaluation, reference checking, and contract negotiation support. We are vendor-agnostic and do not take placement fees from technology vendors.

What is the difference between a fractional CTO and a technology consultant?

A fractional CTO takes executive accountability for technology decisions and outcomes, works as part of your leadership team, and is responsible for delivery - not just advice. A technology consultant provides analysis and recommendations but does not own outcomes. If you need someone to actually lead technology rather than advise on it, fractional CTO is the right model.

How do you handle cyber security and technology risk as part of a technology engagement?

Technology risk and security are always part of our assessment scope. We are not a specialist cyber security firm, but we can identify material risks, commission specialist assessments where needed, and ensure that risk is appropriately prioritised in any technology roadmap. We will not produce a roadmap that ignores known security issues.

What technology transformation work do you typically deliver over a 12-month engagement?

Over 12 months, a typical technology engagement might include a current-state assessment, a technology strategy and roadmap, vendor selection for one or two key systems, programme governance for the initial delivery phase, and establishment of a technology operating model that the internal team can sustain. The specific scope depends on your starting position.

Do you work with specific technology platforms or are you vendor-agnostic?

We are vendor-agnostic. Our recommendations are based on your business requirements, your existing technology estate, and your internal capability to manage and develop the chosen platform. We will tell you when an existing tool can solve the problem rather than recommending a new purchase.

All engagements are led by senior practitioners - not junior teams.
